Interview with Dr. Stephan Lienin on sustainability: an integrated management approach

An interview with our Managing Partner Dr. Stephan Lienin appeared in the Swiss magazine for SME Organisator (only in German) in October 2024.

In the interview, Stephan Lienin emphasizes the increasing importance of an integrated sustainability approach for companies, especially in light of growing regulatory requirements. He emphasizes that sustainability should be more than just an “add-on” and describes how Sustainserv supports companies in anchoring sustainable value creation as a strategic goal. He warns that a superficial approach – such as simply installing photovoltaic systems – is not enough in the long term.

“Many companies have more to offer in terms of sustainability than they realize.”

Holistic approach “By sustainability, I mean business success geared towards the long term; nowadays, you have to think more and more about the value chain as a whole.”

Market pressure and regulations “For Swiss SMEs, there are two things to consider: if you export a lot to the EU as a company, it is probably necessary to implement the regulations for competitive reasons, even if you are perhaps not obliged to do so.”

The future of sustainability “50 years ago, hardly anyone talked about quality and quality management … I’m sure the same will happen with sustainability in the near future.”

Employee motivation and commitment “Employees want to be part of something meaningful. A company that creates value for customers, its employees and the environment is motivating.”

He advocates considering sustainability as a driver for innovation and risk management, similar to how quality management is taken for granted today. He sees great potential for promoting collaboration in supply chains and improving products, particularly in connection with the inclusion of Scope 3 and the creation of climate targets.
